Morogoro
A relaxed town at the foot of the Uluguru Mountains, and the gateway to the Udzungwa Mountains — sometimes called the “Galapagos of Africa” for its endemic wildlife.
Mountains,
Not Migration
Morogoro trades the open plains of the Northern Circuit for dense, mist-covered mountain forest. The Uluguru Mountains rise directly behind the town, popular for day hikes with sweeping views back over the Mkata plains.
An hour or so further south, the Udzungwa Mountains National Park protects one of the richest concentrations of endemic species on the continent — including primates found nowhere else on earth, like the Sanje mangabey. Trails lead through rainforest to Sanje Falls, a spectacular multi-tier waterfall.
Mikumi National Park, a flat savanna reserve easily combined with Morogoro, offers an accessible day-trip safari from Dar es Salaam without the cost or distance of the Northern Circuit.
