Mbeya
Cool highland air, tea and coffee plantations, and the gateway to Kitulo National Park — Africa’s only park dedicated to wildflowers — and the shores of Lake Nyasa.
The “Garden
of God”
Mbeya sits in a highland basin surrounded by volcanic peaks, one of Tanzania’s coolest and greenest regions — tea, coffee and banana plantations cover the hillsides in every direction.
Above the town, Kitulo National Park protects a high-altitude plateau nicknamed “Bustani ya Mungu” — the Garden of God — for its extraordinary wildflower displays, including over 350 orchid species. It’s unlike any other park in Tanzania: no Big Five, just botany, birding and highland scenery.
South of Mbeya, the shores of Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi) at Matema Beach offer a freshwater alternative to the coast, with white sand and calm water backed by the Livingstone Mountains.
