Dar es Salaam

A city where dhows still cross the harbour past glass towers — Tanzania’s economic heart, its busiest airport gateway, and a host city for AFCON Pamoja 2027.

Getting Your
Bearings

Dar es Salaam sprawls along the Indian Ocean in a loose arc of peninsulas and bays. Most visitors never see the whole city — and don’t need to. The parts that matter for a short stay are close together: the harbour-front business district, the leafy diplomatic quarter to the north, and the airport corridor connecting them.

Traffic is the city’s defining rhythm. Roads that take fifteen minutes at 6am can take an hour by 8am. Plan around this rather than against it — most hotels and drivers already do.

English is widely spoken in business, tourism and hospitality, though Swahili is the language of daily life. A few Swahili greetings go a long way here.

Where to Base
Yourself

Each area of Dar has a different personality. Here’s an honest read on the four that matter most to visitors.

Three Ways to
Spend a Day

Dar rewards visitors who know where to look — beyond the traffic, there’s a genuinely great coastal city here.

Find What
You Need

The short version on eating, sleeping and getting around — then search verified listings directly.

Where to Eat

Dar’s best eating is coastal — grilled fish at dawn on Kivukoni, seafood terraces on Msasani, Zanzibari-spiced street food after dark. Oyster Bay and Masaki cover the upscale end; the city centre covers everything cheaper and faster.

Where to Stay

Msasani and Oyster Bay put you near the beach clubs and embassies — the safest, most convenient base for most visitors. Budget travellers and early flights are better served around Mikocheni and the airport corridor.

Getting Around

Bolt and pre-arranged drivers are the only transport worth trusting after dark — skip unmarked taxis entirely. The Zanzibar ferry and the Kigamboni ferry both leave from the city centre, a short walk from most downtown hotels.
