Tanga is Tanzania’s third-largest city, a low-key port with a slower pace than Dar es Salaam and none of the crowds. Just outside town, the Amboni Caves form East Africa’s largest limestone cave system — guided tours explore chambers linked to local legend and history.

South along the coast, Pangani is a smaller, sleepier historic town that rivalled Bagamoyo and Zanzibar as a 19th-century trading port, with Swahili-Arab architecture and dhow-building traditions that continue today. The beaches here are wide, quiet, and largely undeveloped.

Inland, the Usambara Mountains — part of the ancient Eastern Arc range — offer cool-climate hiking and the Amani Nature Reserve, rich in endemic plant and bird species.
